THE FASHION WORLD OF JOHN PAUL GAULTIER: FROM THE SIDEWALK TO THE CATWALK
The National Gallery of Victoria is exhibiting this fabulous exhibition until the 8th of February 2015.
Over 140 garments are on display, spanning from the first of his creations in 1971, his pret-a-porter range introduced in 1976 and his most recent haute couture collections.
Jean Paul Gaultier recalls his first visit to Australia and the ties he has with the country through Nicole Kidman, Gemma Ward, Catherine McNeil and his close friendship with Kylie Minogue. He said, ‘I am honoured and flattered that my exhibitionwill travel to Australia’ and he personally launched the opening at the gallery on 17th October.
The exhibition is exclusive to The National Gallery of Victoria in Australia and is the eighth country to display Jean Paul Gaultier’s creations. The worldwide tour has already had more than one million visitors in countries that include Montreal, London and New York.
The exhibition is organised around seven themes tracing the influences, passions and obsessions of Jean Paul Gaultier. A major feature of the exhibition is the 32 custom mannequins utilising high-definition audio visual projections.
Accessories, sketches, stage costumes and excerpts and footage from films, runway shows, concerts and dance performances will help illustrate the intriguing story of this unrivalled fashion designer.
NGV have a special program of events. These include weekend talks, Friday night specials with fourteen acts, a lecture series, a movie marathon and a special ten day children’s festival.
